Transport for London will introduce new trains on the Piccadilly line and upgrade dozens of stations across the capital in 2026, as part of a major investment programme to modernise the ageing network.
The new Piccadilly line trains will replace rolling stock that has been running for decades, delivering improved reliability and increased capacity on one of London's busiest Underground lines. The modern fleet promises to be more energy-efficient and comfortable for the 650,000 daily passengers who use the route.
Station improvements will focus heavily on accessibility, with more locations becoming step-free to help disabled passengers and those with mobility issues. TfL will also install new toilet facilities at several stations - a long-standing demand from commuters who have complained about the lack of basic amenities across the network.
The upgrades form part of TfL's ongoing effort to modernise London's transport infrastructure, which serves millions of passengers daily across buses, trains and the Underground. With London's population continuing to grow, the improvements are essential to prevent overcrowding and maintain service levels.
Funding comes from a mix of fare revenue, commercial income and government grants. The investment represents a significant commitment to ensuring London's transport network can cope with future demand and maintain the capital's status as a well-connected global city.
