Thailand is made up of 1,430 islands spread across the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, according to a guide published by Condé Nast Traveller. The editor's picks of the best islands to visit in 2026 include recommendations for families, couples, solo travellers, divers and snorkelers.
Koh Samui is named as the pick for families, while Koh Lipe is suggested for couples. Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Phi Phi are recommended for solo travel, and Koh Phi Phi is also listed for divers and snorkelers.
The guide suggests basing an itinerary on the time of year. Islands off the West Coast, such as Phuket, Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe, are at their best from December to April. Koh Samui and Koh Tao off the east coast are ideal for visiting from February to September.
On travelling between islands, the guide advises that it depends on which islands are being visited. It says taking the ferry is best between islands in Southern Thailand. Phuket is described as a great starting point, with a daily ferry to Ko Phi Phi taking anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour plus. Some islands, including Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui, can also be accessed by airplane.
