The eagerly awaited sequel, The Batman Part II, has once again seen its release date pushed back, with Warner Bros confirming it will now arrive in cinemas on 18 February 2028. This marks the second significant delay for the film, extending the wait for fans nearly six years after Robert Pattinson first donned the cape and cowl in the critically acclaimed 2022 original.
Director Matt Reeves announced the new release schedule on Thursday, coinciding with the unveiling of the first camera test footage from the production. The brief clip, shared by Reeves on social media, offers a tantalising glimpse of Pattinson back in his role as Bruce Wayne, standing in the rain while sporting an updated version of the iconic Batman suit before turning to face the camera. Keen-eyed fans were quick to notice subtle changes, including what appeared to be longer ears on the cowl, a detail Reeves himself acknowledged.
Originally slated for an October 2025 release, the sequel was first moved to October 2027 following the widespread writers' and actors' strikes in 2023. This latest postponement to 2028 provides director Reeves with additional time for the intricate post-production process. The new date also strategically places the film within a lucrative Presidents' Day holiday release window in the United States, where it is still planned for an IMAX release.
The cast for The Batman Part II sees several familiar faces returning, including Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb (The Penguin), and Jayme Lawson as Mayor Bella Reál. Exciting new additions to the ensemble were confirmed in May this year, with Marvel stars Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan joining the production, alongside British actor Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch.
While official plot details remain under wraps, speculation is rife regarding the roles of the new cast members. Sebastian Stan appeared to confirm at the Cannes Film Festival that he would be portraying the iconic villain Two-Face, a role that fans had been predicting. In the DC Comics universe, Harvey Dent begins as Gotham City's district attorney and an ally of Batman before a traumatic incident disfigures half his face, leading to his transformation into the criminal mastermind Two-Face. Scarlett Johansson's involvement has further fuelled speculation, with many believing she could play Gilda Dent, Harvey Dent's wife, a character pivotal in the comics' exploration of Dent's descent into villainy.
