A reviewer known as The Services King, who started contributing to the website motorwayservices.uk in 2012, completed visits to all 97 of the UK's motorway service stations in 2019. The individual now works full-time reviewing these locations, alongside writing articles for industry publications and creating sponsored social media posts.
The Services King revisits all motorway service stations periodically to review and post updates on their facilities. This work also includes visiting smaller rest stops on A roads. The reviewer works away from home four days a week and can visit up to five service stations daily, photographing facilities for drivers to use in planning their stops.
Among the preferred service stations are independently owned Tebay on the M6 and Gloucester on the M5, which feature farm shops and restaurants. Key factors for an exemplary service station include a proper sit-down eating area and notable landmarks, such as the Pennine Tower at Lancaster services or a bridge for viewing traffic.
