A new knowledge and experience centre dedicated to whales is scheduled to open in Andenes, northern Norway, on 4 June 2027. The Whale will explore the creatures through science, art, storytelling and sound.
The project began in 2014 when local whale and tourism enthusiasts explored creating a new attraction. Danish architecture studio Dorte Mandrup won an international competition in 2019, with contractor HENT and experiential designers Ralph Appelbaum Associates and Tamschick Media + Space later appointed.
Highlights include the Species Gallery, which explains how whales adapted to sea life 50 million years ago, and Soundscape, a multi-sensory space featuring whale song frequencies. The Horizon Room will show the world's oceans as a single body of water, while the Library of Relations will cover human interactions with whales from ancient myths to modern environmental concerns.
Ticket packages go on sale in autumn 2026, ranging from general admission to tickets paired with hotel stays and whale safaris.
