Leicestershire Police have confirmed the arrest of three 13-year-old boys in connection with a major fire that severely damaged part of Thurmaston Shopping Centre. The arrests were made on suspicion of arson following a review of CCTV footage. The boys are currently in custody as investigations continue.
Emergency services were called to the shopping centre on Barkby Thorpe Lane shortly after 4:15 BST on Saturday. At the height of the incident, more than 40 firefighters were involved in battling the blaze. Fortunately, police have confirmed that no injuries were sustained as a result of the fire.
The fire caused extensive damage, necessitating the demolition of a section of the shopping centre. Retailers confirmed to have been affected and subsequently demolished include popular high street names such as Greggs, Cardfactory, Mountain Warehouse, and Claire's. The full extent of the financial impact on these businesses and the shopping centre itself is yet to be determined.
Detective Inspector Jim Willoughby stated that while the fire service is still working to establish the exact cause, police are treating the incident as a suspected arson attack to ensure no potential evidential opportunities are overlooked. The investigation into the cause of the fire by the fire service is ongoing.
Leicestershire Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses or individuals with information regarding the incident to come forward. Their assistance could prove crucial in the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the destructive blaze.
