Three men have been found guilty of murdering Australian brothers, Jake and Callum Robinson, and their American friend Carter Rhoad. The murders occurred during a surfing trip in Mexico in 2024.

The verdict was handed down on Friday in the Mexican state of Baja California. During the trial, the court heard that the tourists were killed in an apparent botched robbery of their truck in a secluded beach area. Their bodies were later found with gunshot wounds to their heads, dumped down a well.

The parents of the two Australian brothers, Martin and Debra Robinson, were present at the court in Ensenada throughout the trial. Martin Robinson stated, "It's hard for a parent to lose a son, and we lost two sons."

In November last year, the girlfriend of the alleged ringleader, Jesús "El Kekas" Gerardo, was sentenced to twenty years in prison in a separate trial after admitting involvement in the robbery.

Why this matters: The murders sent shockwaves globally, particularly in Australia, as the coastal area is typically considered safe. The killings also prompted calls for greater security for residents and tourists in Baja California, where tourism is a key part of the regional economy.
