The Lord Chancellor has approved the appointment of Tim De Meyer as the Policing Member of the Sentencing Council for England and Wales. The appointment is for a three-year period, commencing on 1 October 2026.

Mr De Meyer brings 29 years of policing experience to the role, having served in various operational and strategic capacities with the Metropolitan Police and Thames Valley Police. Since 2023, he has been the Chief Constable of Surrey Police. He has also held the National Police Chiefs’ Council portfolio lead for Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act Disclosure since 2019.

The Sentencing Council's primary function is to issue sentencing guidelines, which courts are required to follow unless it is not in the interests of justice. The council aims to promote greater transparency and consistency in sentencing while upholding judicial independence.

Why this matters: The Sentencing Council's guidelines influence how sentences are determined in courts across England and Wales.
