Todd Boehly is reportedly open to selling his stake in Chelsea to the club's majority owners, Clearlake Capital. The Financial Times reported on Monday that Boehly, who serves as Chelsea's chairman, and director Mark Walter are in discussions to sell their 12.8 per cent stakes to Clearlake, which is led by Behdad Eghbali.
Rumours of a disagreement between Boehly and Eghbali, whose Clearlake owns a 61.5 per cent stake, first emerged in 2024. It was previously reported that the co-owners had explored options for buying each other out. Walter is also reportedly in the process of selling the Los Angeles Lakers.
Boehly has been a prominent figure since the club's sale in 2022, though his day-to-day involvement has gradually decreased. He is scheduled to step down as Chelsea chairman at the end of the upcoming 2026-27 season, marking the conclusion of his five-year term. The Telegraph previously reported that rules are in place preventing co-owners from selling stakes to outside investors for the first 10 years of ownership.
The Financial Times also reported that Chelsea is now valued at £5bn. This valuation suggests that Boehly and Walter could each roughly double their initial £325m investment made four years ago.
