Tom Cruise's Digger faces estimated $245m loss at box office

Hollywood analysts predict Tom Cruise's latest film, Digger, could lose around $245 million after a poor box office performance, with ticket sales dropping significantly in its second weekend.

  • Digger is expected to lose approximately $245m (£185m) according to Hollywood analysts.
  • The film's global box office takings so far are around $35m (£26m), against an estimated cost of $280m (£211m) to make and market.
  • Ticket sales for Digger dropped by about 60% in its second weekend in cinemas.

Tom Cruise's new film, Digger, is projected to incur losses of around $245 million (£185 million), according to Hollywood analysts. This forecast follows the satirical black comedy's continued poor performance at the box office.

The film, which stars Cruise as oil magnate Digger Rockwell, saw its ticket sales fall by approximately 60% during its second weekend in cinemas. Globally, Digger has accumulated around $35 million (£26 million) in box office takings to date.

With an estimated production and marketing cost of $280 million (£211 million) for studio Warner Bros, Digger's performance could position it as one of Hollywood's most significant film flops. Warner Bros stated the film would need $300 million (£227 million) to break even.

Cruise previously commented that he focuses on making films that "hopefully will translate, last and evolve," rather than opening weekend figures. Digger was the final standalone release for Warner Bros before its recent takeover by Paramount.

Meanwhile, the new sequel to The Social Network, titled The Social Reckoning, also struggled on its opening weekend. It took $5.5 million (£4.1 million) in the US and around $9 million (£6.8 million) globally.

Why this matters: The potential loss for Digger could make it one of the biggest film flops in Hollywood history, impacting the financial landscape for studios and potentially influencing future film investment decisions.
