Veteran actor James Handy, recognised for his extensive career including a role in the blockbuster film Top Gun: Maverick, died from a stab wound to the torso and neck compression, according to official reports. The 81-year-old was discovered unconscious at a Tarzana residence in Los Angeles on 3rd June, suffering from a stab wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the details of his death, ruling it a homicide. Following the incident, 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy's long-term girlfriend Wendy Gledhill, was arrested and subsequently charged with one count of murder. The charge includes a special allegation that he personally used a deadly weapon, specifically a knife.

Reports indicate that Gledhill is currently undergoing psychiatric evaluations, meaning he has not yet entered a plea in the case. Police were alerted to the scene by a 911 call from an individual identifying themselves as the perpetrator. Upon arrival, officers found Handy at the home he shared with Wendy and Michael, with Michael reportedly flagging them down and stating he was the person they were looking for.

Wendy Gledhill has publicly spoken about her son's mental health struggles, revealing that he suffers from schizophrenia and had reportedly stopped taking his medication earlier in June. She expressed profound sorrow and shock over the events, stating her love for Handy and her regret at what transpired. She also suggested that Handy had gone to retrieve a newspaper shortly before the alleged altercation in the front yard.

Handy had a prolific career as a character actor, featuring in numerous well-known films such as Arachnophobia, The Rocketeer, and Jumanji. One of his notable roles was Lieutenant Roger Byers in the 1989 film K-9, a role he reprised a decade later. His final credited role was as barman Jimmy in the critically and commercially successful 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed over $1.5 billion globally.
