Tottenham captain Cristian Romero set for Atlético Madrid move in £34.1m deal

Tottenham have agreed to sell captain Cristian Romero to Atlético Madrid for £34.1m, bringing his five-year spell in north London to an end.

  • Tottenham have agreed a €40m (£34.1m) deal with Atlético Madrid for the sale of Cristian Romero.
  • Romero, who served four suspensions in the 2025-26 season, was given the green light to depart by the club and Roberto De Zerbi.
  • Tottenham have included a 15% sell-on clause in the deal for the World Cup winner.

Tottenham have reached an agreement with Atlético Madrid for the transfer of their captain, Cristian Romero. The deal, valued at €40m (£34.1m), will see the Argentina centre-back move to the La Liga side.

Romero's departure comes after a turbulent 2025-26 campaign where he received four separate suspensions. Both the club and manager Roberto De Zerbi gave their approval for the move.

The World Cup winner will end a five-year tenure in north London, having joined Spurs in 2021. He made 156 appearances for the club and wore the captain's armband when Tottenham secured the 2025 Europa League final.

Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone, a long-term admirer of Romero, is set to finally secure his target. Tottenham have also included a 15% sell-on clause in the agreement.

In other transfer news, newly-promoted Hull have broken their transfer record to sign Senegal defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano. Mendy, 21, has signed a five-year deal and expressed his desire to play in the Premier League. Hull also signed 18-year-old Australia international Lucas Herrington from Colorado Rapids on a five-year deal.

Crystal Palace have re-signed Aston Villa's Evann Guessand on a season-long loan with an option to buy. Meanwhile, Celtic have secured Egypt winger Haissem Hassan from Real Oviedo on a four-year deal, subject to international clearance.

Why this matters: The transfer of Cristian Romero marks a significant change for Tottenham, who are undergoing a major squad revamp under Roberto De Zerbi after finishing 17th in consecutive seasons.
