A community project in Totton, Hampshire, has been left reeling after an estimated £10,000 worth of garden equipment was stolen from its storage unit. The Friends of Bartley Park, a volunteer group dedicated to enhancing local green spaces, discovered the significant theft between 5pm on Thursday and 10:30am on Friday.
The stolen items, crucial for the group's ongoing work, include essential tools such as strimmers, mowers, and a recently acquired wood chipper. The loss represents a major setback for the volunteers, who have spent the last five years transforming 25 acres of woodland and grassland at Ashurst Bridge Road into more accessible and wildlife-friendly areas for the community.
Teresa Young, a retired police officer and one of the dedicated volunteers, described the group's feelings as 'shocked' and 'angry'. She has been actively assisting Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary in their efforts to trace those responsible. Young believes the scale of the theft suggests multiple individuals were involved, given the large quantity of tools taken. She has been conducting house-to-house enquiries, distributing flyers and encouraging local residents with any information to contact the police.
Despite the disheartening incident, the community's response has been overwhelmingly positive. Teresa Young highlighted the 'unbelievable' support received, with donations of replacement equipment already beginning to arrive. She expressed gratitude for the solidarity, stating, 'Knowing that people are coming up and saying, 'you've got our support, we've got you', is lovely.'
Dave Young, who founded The Friends of Bartley Park, recounted his profound disappointment upon learning of the theft. He shared that his 'heart sank' and expressed disbelief that someone would target a community group in such a cruel manner, hindering their efforts to improve the local environment. He added that the perpetrators 'don't seem to care about the damage they have done' to both the group and the wider community.
The theft not only impacts the volunteers' ability to maintain the park but also undermines the spirit of community endeavour. The group remains determined to continue its valuable work, bolstered by the outpouring of local support and the ongoing police investigation.
