The multi-billion pound Transpennine Route Upgrade is set to create thousands of jobs and transform rail travel between Manchester, Leeds and York, Network Rail has announced.
The comprehensive overhaul includes full electrification of the route, new track installation and major station upgrades along the corridor. The improvements aim to slash journey times, boost capacity and enhance reliability for both passengers and freight services.
Network Rail says the project is already generating thousands of direct and indirect jobs during construction. The long-term goal is to strengthen economic links across the Northern Powerhouse, making the region more attractive to investors and businesses looking to expand.
The upgrade addresses years of criticism over underinvestment in Northern rail infrastructure compared to other parts of Britain. It forms a key part of the Government's "levelling up" agenda, with improved transport connections central to the strategy.
Rail infrastructure in the North has historically lagged behind other regions, hampering business growth and limiting job opportunities for workers. The TRU promises to change this by creating a modern, resilient railway network capable of supporting future economic expansion.
Once complete, passengers will benefit from more frequent services, faster journey times and improved comfort. Freight operators will gain more efficient routes, potentially shifting more goods from road to rail and supporting environmental sustainability targets.
