TfL's £1.4 million wildflower verge initiative is in full bloom – literally. Since its launch in 2019, thousands of metres of London's roads have been transformed into vibrant habitats for local wildlife, providing a splash of colour for commuters to enjoy as they travel across the capital.
According to TfL, the scheme has not only improved the city's biodiversity and aesthetic appeal but also slashed maintenance costs. The organisation claims that wildflowers require significantly less upkeep than traditional grass, resulting in cost savings.
Leon Daniels, Director of Sustainability at Transport for London, said: 'Our wildflower verges are a testament to our commitment to sustainability. They provide a unique and enjoyable experience for our customers.'
The programme has so far planted wild marigold, cornflower, and poppy along various roads across the city. TfL plans to expand the initiative further, covering more areas of London's roads.
