The Transport Secretary announced £104 million today, 22 September 2026, to transform the National Cycle Network. This investment will focus on maintaining and expanding the 12,000-mile network, including fixing bridges and updating signage. New routes will also be developed around the High Speed Two (HS2) line.
Speaking at the 'Making Active Places' conference, the Transport Secretary highlighted that billions will be invested in active travel by 2030. Most of this funding will be devolved to local government, providing multi-year funding for long-term plans.
The government's vision for active travel includes aiming for at least 60% of children to walk and cycle to school by 2035. This builds on an agreement with mayors to deliver 3,500 miles of footways, safer crossings, and cycle lanes. Local pilots, including for wayfinding, are also being supported as part of a move towards a consistent national Active Travel Network.
