A newly released interim congressional report has accused former US President Donald Trump of orchestrating a significant scheme to redirect the United States' 250th-anniversary celebrations towards his personal political objectives. The report, titled 'From Vanity to Insanity: How the White House Cheated the American People Out of Their 250th Birthday', outlines allegations of a 'hostile takeover' of the non-partisan commemoration, intended to promote Christian nationalist ideology, gather voter data, and financially benefit political allies.
The US Congress established the US Semiquincentennial Commission in 2016, operating as the non-profit America250 Foundation, with a clear mandate to plan the 2026 celebrations on a strictly non-partisan basis. However, the report alleges that under the Trump administration, a sustained pressure campaign was launched to subsume this commission. When the leadership of America250 resisted demands to shift focus towards what were described as partisan, campaign-style spectacles, the Trump administration reportedly responded by creating 'Freedom 250' as a wholly owned subsidiary of the congressionally chartered National Park Foundation (NPF).
This move, according to the report, allowed the White House to gain control of the NPF board, installing key campaign operatives such as Meredith O’Rourke and Chris LaCivita. This effectively secured an opaque vehicle that, while enjoying the NPF’s non-partisan credibility and tax-exempt status, operated outside standard government transparency laws. The report details a 'web of alleged corruption, wire fraud and pay-to-play schemes' facilitated through this 'shadow corporation' embedded within the NPF.
Jared Huffman, a California congressman and the leading Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee, expressed strong condemnation of the alleged actions. He stated that he could not recall anything similar during his time in Congress, describing the situation as 'watching this trusted, venerable charity organisation, the National Parks Foundation, literally be hijacked for a craven political agenda that tries to steal the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and turn it into something that’s all about Trump, advancing this very divisive agenda and even enriching Trump and those around him.'
The allegations come amidst other recent developments concerning the former president, including his refusal to renew the North American trade pact he had previously championed, opting instead for annual reviews. Additionally, a federal judge recently blocked a proposed restriction on mail-in voting across the US, challenging an election crackdown ordered by Donald Trump.
The 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026 is a significant milestone, intended to reflect on the nation's democratic experiment and history. The report's findings cast a shadow over the preparations, raising questions about the integrity and impartiality of national historical commemorations.
