Separately, Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, indicated on Sunday that a deal with Oman is nearing completion for a new route through the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was also quoted by state news agency IRNA as saying negotiations with Oman were in their final stages. However, Mr Baqaei insisted that any such agreement would not restore the strait to its pre-February 28th status.
The Strait of Hormuz has seen continued volatility, with a tanker reporting an explosion nearby on Sunday. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Centre confirmed the vessel and crew were safe. Shipping data on Monday showed a slowdown in traffic through the strait following reports of vessel attacks.
