US President Donald Trump has announced that new talks with Iran are scheduled to begin on Monday, 3 August 2026. This follows his decision to call off what he described as "massive" strikes on the country.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One on Sunday, Trump stated, "We're talking to them in the form of a negotiation. It begins tomorrow afternoon." He had previously posted on Truth Social that Iran and US allies in the Middle East had asked him to "hold off" on any attack, citing agreement on the "perimeters" of a deal.
Iran has not yet responded to Trump's remarks regarding the new talks. However, Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency denied that Tehran had requested the US to halt military action, labelling Trump's claims as "nothing but a new lie."
Global oil prices fell on Monday morning in Asia trading following Trump's announcement. Brent Crude oil was down by 4.5% at $83.98, while US-traded oil was 4.6% lower at $80.74.
On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reportedly stated that negotiations with Oman concerning a deal on the Strait of Hormuz were "on track for finalisation." Trump did not specify the venue or potential attendees for the proposed talks.
