Donald Trump has claimed a deal has been reached for Hamas to disarm and for Israeli forces to withdraw from Gaza. Trump stated on social media that the agreement would be carried out in carefully structured phases, with an International Stabilization Force working with a new Palestinian police force to ensure security in Gaza.
However, significant obstacles remain. Senior Hamas officials have reportedly agreed to the plan, but a point of contention has emerged regarding the timing of disarmament. Ghazi Hamad, a member of the Hamas negotiating team, told Al Jazeera that Hamas would not disarm prior to Israel's withdrawal from the Strip.
An Israeli official also told Reuters that the proposed terms were not satisfactory. Israel demands the complete disarmament and demilitarisation of Hamas as a precondition for any process, and the current plan does not provide a satisfactory response to these demands.
This announcement follows nine months after a US-brokered ceasefire was signed, with negotiations largely deadlocked over the implementation of its second phase, including Hamas disarmament and Gaza's reconstruction.
