The decision to cancel the hearing has sparked widespread speculation over Mr Trump's intentions and motives. While he claimed that Republicans had rushed Mr Clayton's nomination, suggesting that Pulte would be removed before Democrats could vote on the renewal of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), this move appears to defy established protocol, with Mr Trump no longer holding formal executive authority.
Opposition to Mr Pulte's appointment from both Democrats and some Republicans has been vocal, citing concerns that his background as a federal mortgage regulation agency chair is not sufficient for leading America's vast intelligence community. Adding further complexity to this already tangled web of intrigue, Mr Trump stated he wished to see Mr Clayton's replacement as US attorney confirmed before Mr Clayton assumed the DNI role. Mr Clayton and Mr Pulte have both faced scrutiny over their credentials for the top intelligence position.
