Tuchel Explains Saka Bench Decision for England's World Cup Opener

England manager Thomas Tuchel has clarified his decision to bench Bukayo Saka for the World Cup opener against Croatia, despite the Arsenal winger declaring himself fit. Noni Madueke was preferred on the right wing in one of four significant team selections.

  • Bukayo Saka benched for England's World Cup opener against Croatia, despite being fit.
  • Noni Madueke starts on the right wing, with Anthony Gordon preferred over Marcus Rashford on the left.
  • Jude Bellingham selected as England's No.10, winning a '50/50 call' against Morgan Rogers.
  • John Stones partners Ezri Konsa in central defence, with Marc Guehi on the bench.
  • Tuchel emphasised the importance of a strong bench capable of influencing matches.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has provided insight into his team selection for the Three Lions' opening World Cup fixture against Croatia at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington, confirming four notable changes from what some pundits expected. Perhaps the most discussed decision saw Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka named among the substitutes, despite having recovered from a minor injury and stating his readiness to play.

Tuchel opted instead to start Saka's Arsenal teammate Noni Madueke on the right flank, maintaining the same starting XI that featured in the prior warm-up match against Costa Rica. This consistent approach also meant Anthony Gordon was chosen ahead of Marcus Rashford on the left wing, while John Stones partnered Ezri Konsa in central defence, with Marc Guehi starting the match on the bench.

Addressing ITV before kick-off, Tuchel explained his rationale, particularly concerning Saka's omission. "Bukayo Saka yesterday had an incredible training session and deserved to start," Tuchel stated, adding, "but we will not start and finish this match with 11 players. We need a strong bench and we have players who can influence and change matches from the bench, that’s very important."

Another significant call saw Jude Bellingham confirmed as England's No.10, a position that had been the subject of much pre-tournament debate regarding his contest with Morgan Rogers. Tuchel described the decision between Bellingham and Rogers as "very close," ultimately sticking with the team that performed well against Costa Rica. He clarified that Bellingham's previous major tournament experience was not the deciding factor, stating it was a "50/50 call" that went to Bellingham.

When questioned about Bellingham's readiness, given the midfielder's mixed form at Real Madrid this season, Tuchel responded, "He looked sharp and happy to be on the pitch." The manager also conveyed his excitement for the tournament's commencement, stating, "Amazing, it’s what we worked for and that was the goal of the whole prep camp, to be ready. We don’t want to be anywhere else, I don’t want to be anywhere else in the world than here. Let’s go."
