Twelve people have died and dozens more are injured after a Polish tourist bus veered off the M3 motorway in Hungary and overturned. The incident happened around 01:00 local time on Sunday, 16 August 2026, on the motorway connecting Budapest with Nyíregyháza.
Police believe the driver fell asleep at the wheel and has been taken into custody. Thirty-five of the 57 passengers and two drivers onboard have been rescued so far.
Hungary's ambulance service reported treating one person with life-threatening injuries, nine with serious injuries, and 37 with minor injuries. Emergency services worked to lift the 24-tonne bus to free trapped individuals.
