Two people have been arrested in London on suspicion of assisting Iran's intelligence service, according to the Metropolitan Police. A 60-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman were arrested at properties in London on Wednesday.
The arrests are part of an investigation into suspected National Security Act (NSA) offences. Both individuals have been released on bail under strict conditions until late October.
Police stated that these arrests are not connected to any incidents or attacks linked to Jewish and Iranian communities in London earlier this year. The arrests followed two property searches in north and north-west London in June.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, acknowledged that the news may concern some members of the public but stressed there is no belief of an imminent threat to the wider public. She noted a marked increase in work related to national security and state threats over the past year, with this investigation being a continuation of that effort. The UK's terror threat level remains severe.
