Two councils have been found to be seriously failing their tenants, according to judgements published by the Regulator of Social Housing (RSH). Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and Thanet District Council both received C3 consumer grades, which signify serious failings that require significant improvement.
At Nuneaton and Bedworth, inspectors identified significant improvements were needed in repairs, health and safety, and transparency and accountability. The Warwickshire council was also highlighted for not promptly communicating material issues to the RSH, alongside weaknesses in complaints handling and meeting diverse tenant needs.
Thanet District Council's most significant problems related to the quality and condition of its homes and its failure to demonstrate timely or appropriate action against anti-social behaviour. These were the first consumer grades issued to both councils.
Kate Dodsworth, RSH deputy chief executive, stated that landlords are responsible for providing safe, decent homes and listening to residents. She added that the inspections found serious failings impacting tenants and that the RSH expects swift and sustained improvement where standards fall short.
