Two teenage boys have been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a university student in Sydney, which police state was a case of mistaken identity. Marco Tapia, 23, was shot inside his family's home in Glen Alpine on 1 September.
Officers responded to reports of a home invasion just before 4am that day, finding Mr Tapia with a gunshot wound. He died at the scene. Detectives concluded that the wrong house had been targeted in the incident.
The two boys, aged 14 and 16, were arrested on Wednesday and charged with murder. Police will allege in court that the pair staged vehicles and provided a weapon for the gunman. They also face charges including participating in a criminal group, possession of an unauthorised firearm, and driving stolen vehicles. The 14-year-old was additionally charged with damaging property with fire or an explosion.
Both teenagers have been refused bail and are scheduled to appear in children's court on Thursday. New South Wales police commissioner Mal Lanyon has pledged to target those responsible for a series of shootings in Sydney.
