Uefa and Concacaf have initiated discussions regarding a combined Nations League tournament, which would feature all 96 European and North, Central American, and Caribbean nations. This move is seen as a direct challenge to Fifa.
The two confederations, who have previously united to advocate for Gianni Infantino's removal following the World Cup sell-off controversy, are now working towards creating their own biennial competition. This tournament could potentially launch in 2028, after the next European Championship.
While discussions are in their early stages, the new competition is understood to mirror the existing multi-league format used by both confederations for their current Nations Leagues, culminating in a knockout phase and a final-four tournament. The league phase would reportedly take place during existing international breaks in September, October, and November, with knockout matches in March and finals in June.
The proposed format aims to replace existing international fixtures rather than add to them, with games played in geographic blocks to minimise travel. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has also reportedly expressed interest in joining a global Nations League in the future, with the competition structure designed to be flexible enough to accommodate them.
