European football's governing body, Uefa, has unanimously agreed to boycott all Fifa competitions should Gianni Infantino proceed with his plans to sell portions of the World Cup to US-based private investment. All 55 Uefa members resolved not to participate in future World Cups or other Fifa-run events, stating they "unanimously and unequivocally reject" the proposals.
The decision was made at an emergency meeting lasting just under two hours, with Uefa confirming that no national teams will participate in any Fifa competition as long as these proposals remain active. The proposed boycott would commence with next year’s Women’s World Cup.
Uefa has also extended an invitation to other confederations to follow their stance, with confidence that some Asian countries are similarly inclined. The North American confederation Concacaf, which has expressed opposition to Fifa's plans, has scheduled an emergency meeting for 5:30 pm UK time to discuss their response.
The UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, previously criticised Fifa's plan, stating on X that the World Cup "was never anyone’s to sell."
