Ugandan football captain David Owori has died after being beaten to death by suspected robbers near his home in Kampala. Police said the 27-year-old was fatally assaulted on Tuesday night after resisting an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other belongings.
Witnesses reported that a group of attackers hit the footballer with paving stones before robbing him and fleeing. Mr Owori was rushed to a medical clinic and then transferred to a private facility, but he died of his injuries on Wednesday.
Local police spokesperson Rachael Kawala stated that detectives are pursuing leads to identify those responsible. The scene of the incident has been documented and processed to collect and preserve evidence.
Mr Owori captained Sports Club (SC) Villa, the Uganda Premier League record champions, and also represented the Uganda Cranes national team. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief and renewed public anger over violent crime in Uganda.
