UK airports are experiencing continued disruption after an hours-long air traffic control issue. Hundreds of thousands of people are thought to have been affected by flight cancellations and delays throughout Tuesday and Wednesday.
Nats, the UK's air traffic control provider, has confirmed that flight operations are now stable. However, airlines have warned of ongoing knock-on disruption. Passengers have been advised to check their flight status before travelling to airports.
The technical problem impacted most of the UK's main airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, and Glasgow. Martin Rolfe, the boss of Nats, apologised for the disruption and met with Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander on Wednesday, who requested a full investigation.
Passengers have described significant delays and chaotic scenes, with some reporting sleeping on airport floors and difficulties at baggage reclaim. More than 340 flights were cancelled on Wednesday, according to aviation analytics company Cirium.
