UK airports are experiencing further disruption today, 9 September 2026, after a technical issue led to over 1,000 flight cancellations yesterday. Around 1,300 flights to and from UK airports were cancelled on Tuesday, according to Flightradar24. An additional 279 cancellations were recorded early on Wednesday, primarily at Heathrow and Gatwick.
Bristol Airport and Heathrow have advised passengers to anticipate potential delays today. Gatwick Airport has also stated that while flights have resumed, it will take time for operations to fully return to normal. Passengers are urged to check with their airlines before travelling.
The National Air Traffic Control Service (Nats) confirmed that engineers identified and fixed the problem approximately four hours after the disruption began. However, Nats has not specified how long it will take for systems to normalise following the widespread delays. Nats chief executive Martin Rolfe is due to meet with Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander today to address the disruption.
