UK and Germany Discuss Defence, Migration, and EU Partnership

The Prime Minister met German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin today, 8 October 2026. The leaders acknowledged the strength of the UK-Germany partnership, established under the Kensington Treaty, and expressed a desire for its next phase to be highly ambitious.

Discussions covered defence, with the leaders speaking about the prospect of German involvement in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) to develop a 6th generation stealth fighter jet. They agreed that closer defence collaboration serves the interests of both nations and their allies, committing to further engagement on this issue.

On migration, both leaders agreed that close cooperation is essential for tackling illegal migration and the criminal gangs involved. The Prime Minister thanked Chancellor Merz for German law enforcement's efforts against smuggling gangs, and both welcomed the recent meeting between the Home Secretary and Interior Minister Dobrindt, agreeing to continue discussions on deeper collaboration.

The Prime Minister also stated the UK's commitment to building a stronger, more ambitious partnership with the EU, aiming to deliver practical benefits for citizens and businesses across Europe. He emphasised the importance of a successful UK-EU Summit this year for jobs, growth, and strengthening European industry, security, and resilience.

The leaders agreed that their teams would advance the priorities discussed, with joint cabinet consultations planned for next year.
