Violence has resurged in northern Ethiopia, with seven Ethiopian regional groups announcing an "Alliance for Survival" last month. This alliance aims to remove the federal government.

Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of supporting this rebel alliance, although Asmara denies these claims. There are multiple reports of Eritrean troops in Tigray.

The Ethiopian prime minister is demanding that his landlocked country gain access to the Red Sea, a move that has caused concern and anger in Eritrea. Ethiopia also accuses Egypt and Sudan of backing the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which they deny.

Concerns are growing over the risk of full-scale war within Ethiopia or between Ethiopia and Eritrea, and a potential spiralling regional polycrisis impacting already vulnerable communities. Hundreds are reportedly killed, though the conflict has not yet fully ignited.

Why this matters: The escalating violence reflects deep domestic rifts and is fuelled by broader geopolitical power games, posing a grave risk of full-scale war and a spiralling regional polycrisis.
