The Prime Minister met with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Türkiye yesterday, 22 September 2026, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The leaders discussed the strong bilateral relationship between their countries, with the Prime Minister expressing a desire to maximise benefits for both nations.
Discussions included increasing trade between the UK and Türkiye, and both leaders agreed to redouble efforts to finalise negotiations on an upgraded Free Trade Agreement. The Prime Minister also stated he looked forward to attending the COP 31 summit in November, emphasising the importance of taking climate change seriously after a difficult summer.
On international affairs, the Prime Minister thanked President Erdoğan for his support for recent UK measures targeting illegal settlements in the West Bank. The leaders also discussed security in the Black Sea and agreed on the need for an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine through the winter.
