CMA strengthens proposals for search choice on Android and Chrome

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has updated its proposals to give Google Android and Chrome users more choice over their search services, including AI assistants.

  • The CMA's strengthened proposals aim to give Google Android and Chrome users greater choice and control over search services.
  • The proposals include allowing AI assistants to be chosen as a search service, provided they meet technical and security criteria.
  • Google would be required to offer a choice of search services to Android and Chrome customers annually and upon first use.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has today, 23 September 2026, published strengthened proposals to provide Google Android and Google Chrome customers in the UK with greater choice and control over their search services. These updated proposals reflect the increasing use of new services like ChatGPT and Perplexity for online information.

Under the proposals, Google would be required to offer Android and Chrome customers a choice of search services when they first use their phone or open Chrome, followed by an annual prompt. This includes allowing AI assistants to be featured if they meet relevant technical and security requirements.

Additionally, the proposals mandate that search providers on choice screens must clearly and accurately attribute publisher content, enabling users to access source content and understand where search results originate. The CMA is inviting views on these updated proposals until 9 October, with a final decision expected by the end of the year.

What this means for you: You may be prompted to choose your preferred search service, including AI assistants, when you first use an Android phone or Google Chrome, and then annually.
