The UK government has announced £10 million in new funding to support tens of thousands of civilians in Yemen who have been displaced by escalating Houthi violence. The aid package, delivered through the UN emergency appeal for Yemen, aims to address the declining humanitarian situation in the country.
The funding will provide access to child nutrition and food supplies, as well as emergency healthcare for women and children and vaccines to protect against life-threatening diseases. An estimated 130,000 Yemenis have been displaced following over two weeks of renewed Houthi aggression.
Minister for the Middle East, Stephen Doughty, stated that the Houthis' decision to escalate the conflict is having a devastating impact, costing civilian lives and undermining regional stability. He reiterated the UK's commitment to working with the Government of Yemen and humanitarian partners to protect civilians and return to a political process.
Mr Doughty spoke with the Yemeni Prime Minister on Tuesday and met with the Vice President of the Presidential Leadership Council, Dr Abdullah Al-Alimi Bawazeer, this week. The UK condemns the Houthis' resumption of hostilities and has called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council with Bahrain following the latest escalation.
