Royal Marines and British Army personnel were present at the funeral of King Harald V of Norway in Oslo today. Twenty Royal Marines provided a marching detachment along the route of the funeral procession, and personnel from 1st Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, also attended.
The late King, who died on 28 August, maintained a 45-year relationship with the British Armed Forces. He held the titles of Honorary Colonel in the UK Royal Marines and Honorary General in the British Army.
King Harald V was appointed Honorary Colonel of the Royal Marines in March 1981 by Queen Elizabeth II. This marked the first such appointment involving a member of a foreign Royal household in the Corps' history.
