The UK is bracing itself for a scorching heatwave this week, with temperatures set to soar above 30C in various regions of England, sparking official warnings and advice for the public to stay safe. The Met Office has forecasted widespread warmer conditions, prompting concerns about heat-related health risks.
Temperatures are expected to start rising from Monday, peaking mid-week on Wednesday and Thursday, with areas in southern and central England facing the most intense heat. Some localised spots could see temperatures reach a sweltering 32C, meeting the Met Office's criteria for a heatwave.
While England is set to bear the brunt of the heat, other parts of the UK will experience warmer conditions too. Wales can expect mid-to-high 20s Celsius in eastern areas, while Scotland and Northern Ireland are likely to remain cooler, with temperatures in the low to mid-20s Celsius, although some sheltered eastern parts of Scotland may see slightly higher values.
The Met Office has issued guidance on staying safe, including drinking plenty of water, seeking shade during the hottest periods (11 am to 3 pm), and checking on vulnerable individuals. The elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions are particularly at risk from the heat. Light winds are forecasted, offering little relief from the high temperatures.
Local authorities and health services are preparing for an increase in heat-related incidents. To stay safe, the public is urged to be aware of the signs of heatstroke and heat exhaustion and take proactive measures, such as wearing light, loose-fitting clothing and avoiding strenuous activity during peak heat hours.
