The UK is bracing itself for a severe June heatwave, with temperatures forecast to soar to 32°C in seven counties, sparking warnings for vulnerable individuals. The Met Office has identified the South East and East of England as the regions most at risk, with areas such as Kent, Essex, Suffolk, and Norfolk expected to see the highest temperatures.
While these hot conditions are expected across a wider area, including Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, it's the urban dwellers in England who face the biggest challenge. Light winds below 10 mph will make the heat feel more intense, especially during the peak sun hours (11 am to 3 pm).
Outside of these hotspots, temperatures across the UK are expected to vary, but still remain above average. Scotland could see temperatures in the low to mid-20s Celsius, while Wales and Northern Ireland might reach the mid to high-20s. However, northern areas may experience more unsettled conditions with a higher chance of isolated showers.
The Met Office is urging residents to take precautions during this prolonged heatwave. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, seeking shade when necessary, and wearing light clothing can help mitigate the effects of the heat. Young children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing conditions should be given special attention, as they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
As temperatures rise, so too does the risk of infrastructure damage, increased pressure on health services, and wildfires in dry areas. The public is advised to exercise extreme caution when using barbecues or discarded cigarettes, which can ignite quickly in hot conditions.
