Thunderstorms are set to lash the UK this week as soaring temperatures trigger widespread downpours and lightning strikes across England, Wales and Scotland, the Met Office has warned.
Temperatures will climb into the mid-20s Celsius by mid-week, creating ideal conditions for thunder clouds to form as humidity rises. The combination poses risks of localised flooding, particularly in urban areas with poor drainage systems.
The South West, Midlands and northern England face the highest risk of heavy rainfall and lightning strikes. Wales will experience similar conditions, whilst Scotland and Northern Ireland can expect increased shower activity, with some storms turning thundery.
Forecasters are urging the public to secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather. Drivers face particular hazards from standing water and reduced visibility on roads.
Wind gusts could reach 30-40 mph in exposed areas, adding to potential disruption. The intense downpours may cause surface water flooding rather than gradually replenishing water reserves after recent dry spells in some regions.
The unsettled weather pattern is expected to persist for several days, with thunderstorm risks continuing into the weekend. Temperatures may drop slightly following the storms, but changeable conditions are forecast to continue across the country.
