The UK is bracing itself for a sizzling Father's Day heatwave, with forecasters warning that parts of the country could reach scorching temperatures of up to 30C. This would put Britain on par with the likes of Ibiza, a Mediterranean hot spot usually reserved for sun-seekers.
The Met Office is closely monitoring conditions, but at present, no official heat health alerts have been issued. However, experts are urging people to take precautions as temperatures soar, particularly in England's south-east where highs of 28C-30C are predicted by Sunday. London and its surroundings can expect persistent sunshine, while the Midlands and northern England will see warmer conditions albeit slightly cooler at around 20-23C.
Scotland is set for a pleasant weekend, with temperatures in the high teens to low 20s Celsius, particularly in central and eastern areas. Western Scotland may experience cloudier periods, however. Wales can expect warm sunshine, reaching up to 25C in southern parts, accompanied by gentle breezes. Meanwhile, Northern Ireland will enjoy fine and warm conditions, with temperatures around 20-22C and minimal wind.
As the public basks in the warm weather, it is crucial they stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, seek shade during peak sun hours (11 am to 3 pm), and wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Vulnerable individuals, including those with underlying health conditions, the elderly, and young children, should be particularly mindful of the heat.
Following a mixed start to June, this warm spell is a welcome respite for many. Nonetheless, it serves as a timely reminder of sun safety and being prepared for higher temperatures.
