Temperatures will plummet from 15C this weekend to single digits by Monday, as the UK faces a sharp return to wintry conditions with snow possible across northern regions next week.
The Met Office warns that whilst England, Wales and Northern Ireland enjoy mild sunshine this weekend - with southern areas reaching 15C - a cold air mass will sweep south from Monday, bringing widespread frost and icy conditions.
Scotland will see some weekend sunshine though temperatures remain cooler than further south. The current mild spell stems from southerly air flows, creating perfect conditions for outdoor activities before the dramatic change.
From Monday, daytime highs will drop to single digits across all four nations. Overnight temperatures will frequently fall below freezing, creating widespread frost and dangerous icy patches on untreated roads and pavements.
Northern England, Scotland and high ground across Wales and Northern Ireland face the highest risk of snow from Tuesday into Wednesday, with flakes possible even at lower levels in some areas. Winds will strengthen to 40-50 mph in exposed coastal and hill areas, making conditions feel even colder.
The sudden temperature drop raises concerns about travel disruption, particularly on higher routes and areas hit by snow. Vulnerable residents are urged to ensure adequate home heating, whilst drivers should prepare for hazardous conditions and monitor Met Office forecasts closely.
