The United Kingdom has called for an "action-oriented" United Nations Security Council, aiming for a body that can build consensus and reach compromises through constructive debates. This approach, outlined by Jennifer MacNaughtan, UK Political Coordinator, at a Security Council meeting on working methods, seeks to refine current procedures to advance international peace and security.
The UK also stated its commitment to assessing all candidates for the next UN Secretary-General based on their merits. This process is guided by Article 97 of the Charter and procedures detailed in a joint letter from 25 November 2025, and GA resolution 79/327.
Furthermore, the UK joined other Council members in expressing concern over the continued delay in agreeing chairs for subsidiary bodies. The UK has proposed various options and demonstrated flexibility to resolve this impasse, urging other colleagues to do likewise to ensure all subsidiary bodies are allocated a Chair. The UK also anticipates working with current and incoming Council members to reach an agreement on chairs' allocation in 2027.
