A UK charity is preparing to launch an appeal to help restore education for thousands of children in Nepal following devastating floods. The Somerset-based charity, School in a Bag, aims to provide essential supplies for children affected by the disaster.
The immense flood along the Trishuli River, on the Nepal-Tibet border, occurred on 26 August. It has reportedly resulted in more than 1,000 known deaths and nearly 4,000 people missing. Entire villages, including up to 20 schools, have been wiped out, according to Kathmandu-based charity worker Jimmy Lama.
Luke Simon, founder and chief executive of School in a Bag, stated that a major priority is to help children return to a routine. The charity plans to use funds raised to assemble approximately 3,000 school bags in Kathmandu, which will then be distributed by hand. These bags will help children in temporary learning centres re-establish their education.
The charity is preparing a new appeal specifically for children in Nepal, with all money raised in September dedicated to this effort.
