Wiltshire-based start-up Blakcro has developed defence-grade powered paraglider systems, which are now in operational use with the UK and NATO allies. The company received funding from UK Defence Innovation (UKDI) to create these systems, designed to provide troops with discreet, agile, and independent air mobility.
Blakcro, founded in 2024 by Sam Wedgwood, designs and manufactures fully defence-optimised powered paraglider systems. These systems allow a single operator independent air mobility without needing a runway or a large support footprint. The platforms are described as stealthy and can be deployed from a suitcase-sized box within minutes.
UKDI and the Defence Science Technology Laboratory (Dstl) supported Blakcro through three projects. This included an Open Call for Innovation, funding for an in-flight electrical charging system, and a multi-role trike platform. A Defence Innovation Loan also helped Blakcro scale production and broaden its reach to the wider airborne and commando communities, including the Royal Marines and Parachute Regiment.
Since working with UKDI, Blakcro has grown from a team of three to eleven full-time staff. Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard MP, stated that UKDI's support for SMEs like Blakcro is building a more resilient, homegrown defence supply chain.
