The study's projections extend far beyond the typical 2100 horizon, painting a stark picture of a future where large areas face unprecedented flood risks.
Dr Joanne Williams, an expert at The National Oceanography Centre (NOC), warns that some of these outcomes are unavoidable due to past warming, but notes that significant sea-level rise is still preventable with immediate climate action. She praises the study's advanced modelling techniques, which have avoided the 'bathtub' approach used in less rigorous analyses, but acknowledges that upgrading existing flood defences to cope with extreme scenarios would be a massive undertaking.
Professor Natasha Barlow of Haskoning engineering consultancy has confirmed the robustness of the methodology, which builds upon the UKCP18 framework from the Met Office. She highlights the significance of extending projections to 2300, providing a vital long-term perspective for major infrastructure and waste management projects that require planning over centuries.
The study does not explicitly account for coastal erosion or changes in sedimentation, but Professor Barlow confirms that the authors' inclusion of 'H2' worst-case scenarios is justified. These scenarios capture the upper range of uncertainty regarding potential runaway ice-sheet melt, despite some emissions pathways being deemed less plausible for the 21st century.
Dr Rob Larter, a Marine Geophysicist at the British Antarctic Survey, stresses that the study clearly demonstrates the extensive adaptation the UK will likely need to undertake.
