The British Consulate General building in Jerusalem will not be closing and will now be known as the UK Mission, Jerusalem, as of 8 October 2026. This follows discussions with the Government of Israel.
The UK government has stated it does not accept Israel's legal right to close the Consulate General, which has been present for nearly 200 years. The UK reiterates its long-standing view that East Jerusalem is occupied territory.
The newly named UK Mission, Jerusalem, is described as independent and operational, and will continue to provide services and work with the Palestinian people. The UK aims to maintain its presence and support for a two-state solution.
A number of staff and their families have been temporarily withdrawn to ensure their safety and security, as necessary assurances were not in place without an understanding. The UK plans to rebuild its presence in the coming months and will not take reciprocal action while discussions are ongoing.
