The UK has deployed a Rapid Deployment Team (RDT) to Nepal to support British nationals and their families impacted by devastating flooding along the Nepal-China border. The team, comprising specially trained crisis response staff, is scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu on August 29.
Upon arrival, the RDT will work with British Embassy staff and local authorities to provide additional consular support. This includes coordinating assistance at the airport, helping those seeking information about missing relatives, and reinforcing existing consular operations.
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband stated that the safety and welfare of British nationals is a top priority, and the deployment aims to provide additional support during this difficult time. The UK's response also includes a £5 million humanitarian aid package, announced by the Prime Minister, to assist Nepal with its flood relief and recovery efforts.
The humanitarian assistance will support the Government of Nepal's response through UN, Red Cross, and NGO interventions. The UK has also deployed additional humanitarian expertise to strengthen preparedness and coordination.
