A catastrophic flash flood along the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday has left almost 2,000 people unaccounted for, including at least 90 Americans. The official death toll is nearing 600 and is expected to continue rising.
Survivors, victims, and missing individuals are from various nationalities. The US State Department confirmed on Thursday that three American citizens have been safely rescued, though no US citizen deaths have been reported at this time.
Many of the missing Americans were on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, a sacred site in Tibet. The Isha Foundation stated that 22 Americans returning from a pilgrimage hosted by them are among 80 foundation members not yet located.
The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has stated that the US is prepared to support the Nepalese government with humanitarian assistance. The US embassy in Nepal will provide $500,000 in assistance through a global grant to Catholic Relief Services.
