A study published in Royal Society Open Science examines the environmental impact of welfare-driven changes in UK egg production. The research suggests that while animal welfare improves in non-cage, free-range, and organic systems compared to 'business as usual' caged production, their environmental burden may increase.
Dr. Laura Cardenas, an Atmospheric Chemist at Rothamsted Research, noted that the study's conclusion is based on three animal welfare indicators and mainly three environmental metrics: greenhouse gas emissions, acidification, and eutrophication. She questioned the units used for global warming potential and highlighted that the difference between systems is primarily due to animal numbers, as more animals are required in more extensive systems to achieve the same production level.
Prof. Dominic Moran from the Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh, described the paper as a robust use of modelling to illustrate a policy dilemma. He stated that higher welfare does not always come with environmental improvements, especially regarding emission reductions, suggesting trade-offs that policymakers and consumers may need to consider.
However, Prof. Ilias Kyriazakis, Professor of Animal and Veterinary Science at Queen's University Belfast, raised concerns about the study's methodology. He stated that the paper relies on data from 2010 to represent 2023 conditions, without adequately accounting for substantial changes over that period. Prof. Kyriazakis also noted that the authors disregarded updated emission factors from Defra, which may have led to an overestimation of impacts for alternative systems.
